Our Treasure

Many years ago I came across this quote in a dog book I was reading and still love it.

“Some of our greatest historical and artistic treasures we place with curators in museums; others we take for walks.”

Dogs are treasure and we should cherish our time with them as we only have them for such a short time in our life’s. It is not always easy and perfect and yes it can be so hard sometimes. I learnt a long time ago to concentrate on what went well and not constantly on what did not, yes we need to look at things that may not be ideal but we often lose sight of the positive and think to hard on the negative. We are bombarded with what the perfect life with a dog looks like and when we do not reach those dizzy heights we feel bad or even disappointed. Being human is tough and we so often forget to be kind to ourself’s and just enjoy what is working well, dogs really do love us and us them but just like in any relationship it is not all sunshine and flowers everyday.

If I am working with a dog that wants to shout at other dogs and on our walk he/she only shouts at 9 out of the ten dogs that we see, yep I celebrate the one they did not shout at. I do know it is not always that easy but if we constantly stay with the negative it really can make moving forward much harder for us and our dogs. So cut yourself and your dog some slack and enjoy the good stuff and the rest will follow given time, training, kindness and love. Take time to just enjoy the moment with your dog and marvel at just how wonderful they are.

Dogs really are a treasure we should celebrate, enjoy our time with them, treat them with love and kindness and remember dogs are dogs and not robots and just like us may not be perfect all the time….or are they! All my dogs have been the perfect treasure to me and far more valuable than any masterpiece or historic treasure hanging in a museum or gallery!
