Loose Lead and Recall

We began our newest 4 week course at the weekend centred around better lead walking and recall. Lead walking and recall may not seem that well connected so why do them together? Well the honest answer is that they like all things dog training require focus from our dogs, however it is a two way street if we are not focusing on the dog why should they focus and listen to us.

We spent week one working on a number of things for the dogs and these included building focus, focus on the move, relaxing around the other dogs and distractions, reward placement, when to reinforce, what to reinforce and how often.

It was also a session focused on the human end of the lead. So much is made about teaching the dogs but in reality it is often us humans getting our timing wrong, our reward placement in the wrong place and so on. It was great to work on these little tweaks that instantly improved the handling skills.

Dog training is a two way street and all about communication and understanding. If we can relay to our dogs what we would like we are more likely to get it, if we reward what we like from them it is more likely to be repeated. Dog training is a process and that can take time, but with kindness, understanding, consistency and repetition we can get to a point that works for us and the dogs.
