Pattern Games

What are they and how do they work?

Pattern Games, developed by Leslie McDevitt, are a series of structured exercises designed to help dogs develop self-control, focus, and confidence in various situations. These games can be incredibly beneficial for dogs of all ages and backgrounds, particularly those who can find our world difficult to navigate.

Pattern Games is about creating predictable patterns that dogs can learn and anticipate. Pattern Games help dogs feel more secure because they can predict what is going to happen next and this in turn helps them relax and gain confidence as we build up these behaviours.

  1. Builds Confidence
Many dogs, especially those that are fearful or anxious, can feel overwhelmed by new or unpredictable situations. By engaging in Pattern Games, dogs learn to navigate the world with a clearer understanding of what will happen next. This routine helps them feel safer and more confident in their environment, reducing fear-based behaviours.
  2. Enhances Focus and Self-Control
One of the core benefits of Pattern Games is that they encourage dogs to focus and engage in controlled, mindful actions. For example, in games like “Look at That,” dogs are taught to focus on a stimulus (like another dog or person) while remaining calm and not reacting impulsively. Over time, these games build impulse control and enhance the dog’s ability to focus on the task at hand rather than distractions.
  3. Reduces Reactions
Many dogs react to certain triggers, like other dogs, loud noises, or unfamiliar people. Pattern Games help to desensitise these triggers by associating them with predictable and controlled positive responses.
  4. Strengthens the Bond Between Dog and Handler
The games help with communication between the dog and their human. By practicing these exercises, we learn how to better read our dog’s body language, while dogs learn to respond to our cues in a positive, reinforcing manner. This mutual understanding deepens the relationship, promoting trust and cooperation.

Pattern Games by Leslie McDevitt offer a powerful toolkit for helping dogs become more confident, focused, and calmer in situations that they may find difficult. Whether your dog is fearful, anxious, or simply needs a structured way to interact with the world, these games can significantly improve their well-being and strengthen their relationship with you.
