One to One Dog Training Isn’t Just for Dogs Who Need Space

1-2-1 dog training

When people hear the words “one-to-one dog training”, they often assume it must be for a dog who is reactive, nervous or unable to cope in a group class.

1-2-1 training can certainly be a brilliant option for dogs who need more space. It allows us to carefully manage the environment, work at the dog’s pace and help them feel safe without the added pressure of several other dogs nearby.

However, that’s only a small part of what one-to-one training can offer.

You don’t need to wait until something has become a major problem before asking for individual support. Sometimes you simply have something specific you’d like to work on, want guidance that is tailored to your dog or would prefer the chance to ask questions without feeling as though you’re holding up the rest of a class.

1-2-1 training isn’t a sign that your dog has failed at something. It’s simply training designed around the dog in front of us.

Training that starts with your dog

Group classes can be a fantastic way to learn. At SkellyWAGS, our Puppy Classes and Life Skills Classes give dogs and their guardians the opportunity to develop useful skills in a carefully managed environment.

A class must still follow a general structure, though. While we always adapt exercises where we can, the session needs to work for everyone attending.

A one to one session is different because the whole session belongs to you and your dog.

We can look at what you would like help with, what is happening in everyday life and how your dog responds in different situations. We can then create training that suits your dog’s age, confidence, experience, motivation and personality.

Some dogs learn quickly but become frustrated easily. Others need a little more time to observe before joining in. Some will work enthusiastically for food, while others would rather sniff a hedge and investigate who passed through three hours ago.

That isn’t a dog being difficult. It’s useful information, and one-to-one training gives us the time to listen to it.

You don’t need to have a “problem dog”

I really don’t like the idea of labelling dogs as problems. Dogs behave for a reason, even when that behaviour is inconvenient, confusing or occasionally leaves us standing in a muddy field calling their name while they develop a sudden interest in landscape gardening.

Many people book a 1-2-1 Training Session because they would like help with one particular part of life with their dog.

That might include:

  • Recall training
  • Loose lead walking
  • Jumping up
  • Puppy biting and settling
  • Adolescent behaviour
  • Focus around distractions
  • Calmness when visitors arrive
  • Building confidence in new places
  • Helping a dog relax
  • Introducing scentwork
  • Preparing for a group class
  • Learning how to make training clearer and more enjoyable

Sometimes there isn’t a behaviour concern at all. A guardian may simply want to learn some new skills, understand their dog better or make sure they are starting in the right direction.

Training can be preventative as well as responsive. It’s much easier to build useful habits gradually than to wait until everybody is thoroughly fed up and the dog has spent six months practising the opposite.

A helpful start for puppies

1-2-1 training can be especially useful when a puppy first arrives home.

The early weeks can feel like a mixture of excitement, love, interrupted sleep and repeatedly asking, “What have you got in your mouth now?”

A personal session gives you the opportunity to talk about the things that are happening in your home. We can look at puppy biting, toileting, sleep, settling, handling, building confidence and introducing training through play.

It can also help you prepare for Puppy Classes, particularly if you’re unsure how your puppy might respond around other dogs or in a new environment.

Our Puppy Package combines individual support with group learning, helping guardians build solid foundations while still receiving guidance tailored to their puppy.

Support through adolescence

Adolescence can be an interesting time. Skills that appeared to be going rather well can suddenly become optional, distractions become much more exciting and your young dog may begin making some fascinating life choices.

This doesn’t mean your dog has forgotten everything or is deliberately testing you. Their body, brain and social world are changing, and they may need more support while they find their way through it.

A 1-2-1 session allows us to look at what has changed and adjust the training accordingly. We might work on recall, lead skills, focus, frustration or calmness, but we’ll also consider sleep, enrichment, environment and whether the expectations currently match the dog’s stage of development.

For some dogs, this individual support can help them move into a Life Skills Course with greater confidence. For others, continuing with one-to-one sessions may be the best fit for a while. There isn’t one correct route that every dog must follow.

Learning at your own pace

People learn differently too.

Some guardians love learning in a group, while others feel more comfortable having the space to ask questions and practise without an audience. You may have a busy family life, a very specific training goal or a dog whose needs don’t fit neatly into a standard course.

During 1-2-1 training, we can slow things down, repeat an exercise, try a different approach or spend more time on the part that matters most to you.

It also gives me the chance to explain why we are doing something. I don’t just want to hand you a list of exercises and send you home. Understanding what your dog is communicating and why the training works helps you make better decisions when real life inevitably refuses to follow the lesson plan.

1-2-1 scentwork sessions

Individual sessions aren’t limited to everyday training skills. They can also be a great way to explore something new with your dog.

Scentwork is suitable for dogs of different ages, breeds and experience levels. It can provide mental enrichment, build confidence and give dogs an opportunity to use their remarkable sense of smell.

A Scentwork Introduction Session allows you and your dog to learn together without needing any previous experience. We can work at your dog’s pace and discover what they enjoy searching for.

Scentwork can be particularly helpful for dogs who aren’t comfortable in a traditional class environment, but plenty of confident, sociable dogs enjoy it too. Your dog doesn’t need a reason to take part beyond enjoying the chance to use their nose.

Preparing for classes rather than avoiding them

Booking a 1-2-1 session doesn’t necessarily mean giving up on group classes.

For some dogs, it can be a useful stepping stone.

We might begin with a relaxed walk around the Meadow, allowing the dog to explore the venue and become familiar with the surroundings. From there, we can gradually introduce training closer to the field or help the dog learn to work while other dogs are present at a comfortable distance.

The aim isn’t to rush the dog into a class. It’s to give them the skills and confidence they need so that, if a class is right for them, they have a better chance of enjoying it.

Some dogs may move into Adventure Dogs via our Flexible class option, Life Skills or one of our Scentwork Classes. Others may continue learning individually, and that is equally valid.

Success isn’t measured by whether every dog can train in a busy group. It’s measured by whether the training is helping that particular dog and their guardian.

Training that fits real life

One of the biggest advantages of 1-2-1 training is that we can focus on the situations that matter in your everyday life.

You may not need a perfectly polished training routine. You might simply want to enjoy a calmer walk, call your dog away from an interesting smell, welcome visitors without chaos or help your puppy settle while you drink a cup of tea before it reaches the temperature of pond water.

These goals may not look dramatic on social media, but they can make an enormous difference to life with your dog.

At SkellyWAGS, training is never about forcing every dog into the same mould. It’s about building communication, confidence and useful skills through positive, reward-based training.

Is 1-2-1 training right for you?

A 1-2-1 session could be a good choice if:

  • You have a particular skill you would like to work on.
  • You’ve recently welcomed a puppy or rescue dog into your home.
  • Your dog needs more space around dogs or people.
  • You would like to prepare your dog for a group class.
  • You prefer learning privately and asking questions as you go.
  • Your dog finds group environments distracting or overwhelming.
  • You would like to try scentwork or another new activity.
  • You want to understand your dog and communicate with them more clearly.
  • You’d simply like to spend some focused, enjoyable time training together.

You don’t need to wait for a crisis, and your dog doesn’t need to fit a particular label.

Sometimes 1-2-1 training is about working through something difficult. Sometimes it’s about getting off to a good start. And sometimes it’s simply about learning something new together and having a bit of fun along the way.
